SYNONYMS: Alocasia aff. clypeolata, Alocasia cfr. clypeolata (the cfr. term is used incorrectly in the case of this undescribed species, but listing it to be complete)

DISTRIBUTION: Philippines | Visayas | Samar | Possibly also in Leyte and Biliran

Alocasia clypeolata, like many of the Philippine species shows high variability across geographies. It appears that primary vein count increases as one goes North. Alocasia ‘Samar’ is shown at the northernmost tip (far left)

CLIMATE: Subtropical humid climate

Humidity is moderate throughout the year, ranging from 60% to 70%

Temperature is varies between the seasons - within the range of 48°F/9°C to 88°F/31°C during the day. Minimum temperatures never dip below 45°F/7°C

Rainy and humid season (October to May) and a dry season between June and October. The average annual rainfall is 1,200 mm

SPECIES DESCRIPTION:

It is an undescribed species Alocasia from Samar, and appears to be closely related to Alocasia clypeolata, differentiating based on the higher number of primary veins, and a much larger size when mature.

INFLORESCENCE: Inflorescences are quite similar to Alocasia clypeolata which means Alocasia ‘Samar’ is most likely a cultivar of the type species
